LAISVYDĖ ŠALČIŪTĖ

Laisvydė Šalčiūtė illustrated books and wrote some of them herself (Red ball, Dwarf’s hat, both in 2005 won awards, Winter’s tale 2006, Are you afraid to get wet? 2011). The artist won the prize of the Association of Lithuanian Art Creators (2007) and Culture and Art Prize of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania (2020). Since 1988, she has participated in exhibitions in Lithuania and abroad (more than 100 group exhibitions; about 40 individual exhibitions: in Vilnius 1992–97, 2002–04, 2006–08, 2010–12, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, Kaunas 2011, Klaipėda 2013, 2016, London 2012, Brussels 2004, Chicago, New York 2008, Copenhagen, Angers 2017, Mantua 2019 and others. Some of the works are held by the Lithuanian National Art Museum, the National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in Vilnius, the Vilnius University Graphics Office.

The artist created graphics (prints, drawings), paintings, artist’s books, objects, installations, photographs. She is a conceptual artist and chooses the medium of performance of her works depending on the concept of the conceived cycle of works. The artwork style has a big variety of expression, genres, techniques, their combination (wood carving and painting, etc.). The use of elements and texts typical of cinema and theater (usually quotes from pop culture) is very characteristic in the artist’s work. The works are ironic, provocative, breaking stereotypes, playful, themes related to women’s identity are developed.
