AUGUSTAS BILDAUSKAS

Augustas Bidlauskas (born in 1981) graduated from the Vilnius Academy of  Arts (2004–2010) in graphic studies. Organized personal exhibitions in Vilnius and Klaipėda and since 2007 participates in organized exhibitions in Lithuania. He exclusively uses the mezzotint technique in his work. For almost a decade, August’s works have been characterized by the human theme, which the artist interprets using the language of allegories, exploring the limits and weaknesses of humanity with undisguised irony.

“The works mix the motifs of today’s social reality with historical, mythological themes. Living in a specific body cult and image construction era, influenced by the ideas of cultural theory, I cannot remain just an observer. I am interested in how meanings are produced, so I turn to the reference point – the human being. The technique I work with directly reflects the idea of a person as a social and cultural construct. Constructing a person from different details, I analyze how often the set of conflicting elements produces new identities and meanings, and at the same time exposes the relativity of meaning itself.” – A.
